Description

An early 18th-century group of cottages situated on Midgley Road, near Mytholmroyd. The cottages comprise an L-shaped block with separate roof ridges. Number 5 is constructed of large, dressed stone, while Number 4 is of hammer-dressed stone. Both have stone slate roofs. The north elevation of the cottages faces across a yard towards White Lee House and features 8-light, double-chamfered mullioned windows on both floors. A blocked first-floor taking-in door has a chamfered surround. Number 4 projects forward and includes a former first-floor taking-in door within the return wall, now a window. The front elevation has recessed flat-faced mullioned windows with square reveals of 2 lights on the ground floor and a similar arrangement above, with a 3-light window replacing 2 mullions on the first floor. A doorway has monolithic jambs. The right-hand return wall of the rear cottage has a doorway with monolithic jambs, above which is a date plaque (likely re-used), inscribed "S H : 1 6 1 5". There is a 4-light, double-chamfered mullioned window above the doorway, serving the first floor. Three stacks are located in the gables.
