Description
Ewood Gate House is a house that once served as the gatehouse to the now-demolished Ewood Hall, built around 1865. It is constructed of ashlar stone and has a slate roof. The building features a symmetrical three-bay facade and is square in plan. Notable architectural details include rusticated quoins, an eaves band, and moulded gutter brackets that support a moulded cornice.
The central bay projects forward over the entrance, which is framed by engaged Corinthian columns that support a segmental arch. Above the entrance, there is a segmental arched fanlight with a keystone and impost block. The first floor has rusticated quoins and a shouldered arched window with an architrave that displays a heraldic shield beneath the sill. The cornice is returned and broken by a raised pediment with an oculus above.
On either side of the central bay, there are sashed windows on each floor with lugged architraves. The left return wall features a central two-light sashed window on both floors, flanked by well-dressed stacks. The rear of the house has two tall segmental-headed windows separated by a trefoil design. The right return wall faces the former coach road and has two bays of similar sashed windows, with a portico in between that includes a stilted arched doorway with an expressed keystone. The outer bays also have two stacks. The roof is pyramidal in shape.
