Description

Lower Ewood is a house dating from the mid 17th century, constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It is two storeys tall and has an L-shaped layout, featuring a main range with a hipped roof and a projecting gabled cross-wing that is 2½ storeys high.

The east elevation of the main range is divided into three sections. The first section has a double chamfered mullioned window with four lights. The second section includes a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a single arch-headed light above which are sunken spandrels leading to the first floor. The third section features a nine-light window with a four-light chamfered mullioned window above it on the first floor. The wing projects at a right angle to the main range, and its south elevation has two bays of double chamfered mullioned windows with five lights on each floor. The first bay also has a doorway with a chamfered surround.

The right-hand return wall is the east gable of the wing, which has five-light windows on each floor and a two-light attic window at the apex, topped with a coped gable and kneelers. The left-hand return wall of the main range has two bays of four-light windows on each floor, with double chamfered mullions on the ground floor and flat-faced mullions on the first floor, capped by a hipped gable. The rear of the main range was altered in the early 19th century and features one bay of double chamfered mullioned windows with four lights on both floors, with chamfered mullions on the first floor.

Inside the main range, the house has scarf jointed spine beams, evidence of a former bressumer, and stop-chamfered joists. There are two stacks in each range.
