Description
A group of three cottages at 28, 30, and 32 Northgate, Heptonstall, dates to the mid-18th century, with one cottage specifically dated 1769. The cottages are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. Numbers 30 and 32 are three storeys to the front, with two storeys to the rear. Number 28 is two storeys high and has quoins, featuring three square, flat-faced mullioned windows on the front, with two smaller single windows above to the first floor. Numbers 30 and 32 are at a slightly different alignment and have paired doorways with monolithic jambs in the centre, flanked by five-light, flat-faced mullioned windows with slightly recessed mullions. The first and second floors of numbers 30 and 32 feature six-light windows. Quoins and kneelers are present, though the gables lack copings. Gable stacks retain moulding at the base. The rear elevation features paired doorways with tie-stone jambs, and over doorways to the first floor are openings for taking-in doors. The rear of number 28 has a similar doorway with a lintel inscribed "D B B," and a single square window to the first floor. A gable stack is also present on the rear.
