Description

Nos. 5 and 7 Northgate is a house dated 1736, located in Heptonstall. It is attached to No. 1 and now forms part of the Cross Hotel at No. 46 Towngate. The building is constructed of rubble brought to course. It features a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a cyma moulded surround, above which is a unique decorative tablet inscribed "F 1 7 H E 3 6" (for Henry and Elizabeth Foster), depicting a man and woman carved in shallow relief, dressed in contemporary attire. To the right, there are two bays of four-light double chamfered mullioned windows, one of which has been altered and extended with an inserted doorway that is out of sympathy with the original design. The rear of the building has a blocked first-floor taking-in door. The right-hand return wall has a coped gable with kneelers. The building lacks a stack.
