Description
Flat 1 and Flat 2 at 41 Town Gate is a pair of single-cell houses built around 1730. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and topped with a stone slate roof. The building has three storeys and features a classical front with rusticated quoins and a band at each floor level. The ground floor has two doorways, one of which is blocked and converted into a window. Both doorways are approached by steps and have simple cast iron rod railings. Each doorway features a shouldered architrave and a triangular pediment, with a cornice that extends to either side over single narrow lights with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills.
On the first floor, there are three windows with plain stone surrounds that were originally sashed but now have altered glazing. The second floor includes a five-light flat-faced mullioned window, where the second and fourth lights are narrower and taller, originally designed to accommodate a sash. The building is topped with a modillion cornice and has coped gables with dressed stacks.
The left-hand return wall is attached to No. 39, which is taller at the gable. The rear of the building has two bays of sashed windows on each floor, with plain stone surrounds that decrease in height. The flush quoins are visible, and the right-hand return wall features a blocked doorway with a shouldered architrave to the left of a mid-20th century inserted doorway, along with single sash windows on the first and second floors, all of which have altered glazing.
