Description

Litherstone is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, which was altered in the mid-19th century to create three cottages. The building is two storeys high and constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It features quoins and has a street-facing elevation that includes a doorway with a segmental arched lintel and a stop-chamfered surround to the left of a single window with plain stone surrounds. This arrangement is mirrored on the first floor. The central doorway for No. 4 has monolithic jambs, flanked by large square windows. Above, there are two windows with double chamfered surrounds. To the left, the doorway for No. 2 has monolithic jambs and leads to an altered double chamfered mullioned window with two lights, with a similar window above on the first floor. The right-hand return wall features a doorway to the basement, a two-light double chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor, and a two-light chamfered window without a mullion on the first floor. The rear of the building has a three-light chamfered mullioned window and a six-light window that retains only the king mullion. A mid-19th century lean-to includes a stack, and there is another stack on the ridge. The rear also shows large stone footings that likely belong to an earlier timber-framed structure. Above No. 4, there is a plaque commemorating Methodist meetings held here around 1746 to 1748.
