Description
Stag Cottage and the basement lock-up is a house dating from the late 16th century, currently serving as the headquarters for the Calder Civic Trust. The building is constructed from large, roughly dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It has a gabled cross-wing, with part of a range that is flush with the wing. The structure is two storeys tall.
The entrance has a doorway with monolithic jambs that has been inserted into a former mullioned window, the jambs of which are still visible. Above this, there is a three-light chamfered mullioned window. On the ground floor, there is a four-light chamfered mullioned window with arched lights and sunken spandrels, featuring cavetto moulded mullions. A similar three-light window is located on the first floor. The gable is coped and includes kneelers, as well as a carved apex stone topped with a crocketed finial.
Inside, the building features a king-post truss with vertical struts that retains wattle and daub infill, along with a straight brace to a diagonally set ridge. The former wall plate has a groove on its soffit. The basement, which can be seen from the car park, has a doorway with monolithic jambs leading to an arched cellar that was used as a lock-up or dungeon in the 19th century.
