Description

Nos. 12 and 26 on Town Gate are houses with origins in the 17th century that were converted into cottages in the mid-19th century, now forming two separate dwellings. They are constructed from large dressed stone and topped with a stone slate roof. The buildings are two storeys high and have an irregular L-shaped plan.

The facade of No. 26 features a gable facing the road, which retains its kneelers but has lost its copings. There is a doorway with a broad chamfer to the left of a former two-light chamfered fire-window. On the first floor, there are two windows with chamfered surrounds. A cell at right angles to the main structure projects forward and has kneelers on the gables, along with altered windows, one of which has a cyma moulded cornice. The rear of this range, accessed through an archway, includes a three-light chamfered mullioned window.

No. 12 consists of two cells with former paired doorways at the center, one of which is blocked. To the right, there is a double chamfered mullioned window with four lights, and on the first floor, there is a five-light window along with a former six-light window, both of which have single chamfered surrounds. Some of the mullions are missing. The buildings feature two stacks at the ridge. The interior has not been inspected recently, but it was noted ten years ago that there were scarfed spine beams, which may suggest the presence of a firehood bressumer.
