Description

No. 15/17 Town Gate is a house that dates back to 1729 and features initials "R S". It is constructed from thin coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and faces the road. It has a double chamfered mullioned window with three wide lights, which likely had five originally, and a former four-light window above that is missing two mullions. There are two tall doorways, one of which has a date inscribed on the straight lintel, but both have been converted into large windows. Above these, on the first floor, is a three-light flat faced mullioned window.

The left-hand return wall features a wide coped gable with kneelers and a stack. Quoins near the center suggest that the building was extended or altered in the 18th century. To the left of the quoins, there is a doorway with two-light chamfered mullioned windows above, leading to the first floor and attic. The rear of the building has quoined angles that are also visible up to the first floor. It features a double chamfered mullioned window with five lights, complete with a king mullion, and a four-light chamfered mullioned window above it. To the right of a blocked taking-in door with monolithic jambs, there is a two-light window with a three-light window above. The building also has a central stack.
