Description

Royd Farmhouse and attached barn date from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The barn was originally listed in 1966, and then combined with No. 2, now forming a single house with No. 4. The barn is constructed of thin, hammer-dressed stone, while No. 4 is built of large dressed stone and has a higher roofline. The south facade of the building faces the road at the entrance to the village.

No. 4 features a large, two-light, flat-faced mullioned window with a projecting sill to the left of the doorway, which has monolithic jambs. A matching window is located on the first floor. A coped gable marks the junction with the barn, and a single stack rises from the ridge. The barn has an arched cart entry with a simple Venetian window above. To the left of this, an earlier cart entry with a straight lintel and chamfered surround is now blocked and forms a two-light, flat-faced mullioned window and doorway for No. 2, again with monolithic jambs. A mistal doorway at the lower end has a quoined lintel, partly blocked to form a window.

The right-hand return wall is characterised by quoined angles and a coped gable with kneelers. The prominent gable has two rows of arrow slit ventilators – three over four – surmounted by a Venetian window with an impost and false keystone to the apex. The rear elevation of No. 4, dating from the mid-18th century, includes a doorway with a large lintel to the left of a chamfered window. A former five-light chamfered mullioned window lacks two mullions.
