Description

Nos. 10 and 14 on South Street are a pair of houses dating from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. They feature plastered and rendered cob and rubble walls, topped with a gable-ended thatch roof. There are two axial brick stacks and one at the right gable end. Each house has a two-room plan, with No. 14 on the left having a carriageway beneath the left-hand end.

The exterior is two storeys high. No. 14 has an asymmetrical four-window front, with a two-light 20th-century casement window to the left on the first floor and a carriageway below it. The other first-floor windows are 19th-century three-light casements, while the ground floor has two 20th-century three-light casements and a part-glazed door at the centre. No. 10 features an asymmetrical three-window front with mid to late 20th-century diamond leaded pane two-light casements and a stable-type door to the right of centre.

Inside No. 14, there is a fireplace in the right-hand room with a chamfered and jewel-stopped wooden lintel, along with a heavy chamfered cross beam. A section of a plank and muntin screen is exposed in this room, although it appears to be the back of the screen and is of rough construction, with the other side concealed. A similar partition can be found on the first floor but is covered with wallpaper. The feet of straight principals resting on the wall-plate are visible on the first floor and are likely from the 18th century or later.
