Description
20 and 22 South Street are a pair of cottages that were originally one house, dating from the 17th century with later additions from the late 17th or 18th century and the 19th century. The buildings have rendered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended thatch roof. There is a brick stack at the left-hand end and a truncated rendered rubble stack at the right gable end.
Currently, the structure functions as two cottages, but it was originally designed as a two-room plan house, likely with a central passage. A later 17th century or early 18th century wing was added behind the right-hand end, with a 19th-century extension beyond that.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. There are two windows for No. 20, which are 20th-century two-light casements, except for the ground floor right-hand window of No. 20, which is a late 19th-century six-pane sash. The left-hand window of No. 20 and its adjoining six-panel door are slightly projected at the center of the building. No. 22, located to the left, features a 20th-century part-glazed door at its right end.
Inside No. 22, there is a substantial cross beam and an open fireplace with a wooden lintel, and it is possible that the original roof timbers are still intact.
