Description
A pair of cottages, originally a single house, dating from around the mid to late 17th century, with alterations and an extension in the 20th century. The walls are of partly rendered rubble and cob, with a thatch roof that is hipped to the left and gabled to the right end. There is a brick axial stack and a brick stack at the right-hand end. No. 21 has a two-room plan, with a 20th-century rear extension, while No. 23 has a single-room plan with a rear addition. The original layout was a three-room house with a carriageway to the rear, dividing the central and right-hand rooms; it was later divided into two cottages in the 20th century. The front has an asymmetrical five-window facade, with three windows to No. 21 on the left. The first-floor window on the left is a single-light 19th-century casement, while the others are late 19th-century four-pane sash windows. The central section of the house projects, with a 19th-century panelled and glazed door. No. 23, to the right, has a wide carriageway, with one late 19th-century four-pane sash window and two above. A 20th-century plank door is located in the right-hand wall of the carriageway. Inside No. 21, there is a fireplace with a rough wooden lintel and a clay oven. The roof likely contains 18th-century timbers, with straight principals that have curved collars pegged and set into the trusses.
