Description
This is a cottage located at 39 South Street in Hatherleigh, dating from the mid to late 17th century. It features rendered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended thatch roof. There is a stone rubble stack at the right gable end, complete with a dripmould. The cottage likely has a two-room plan, with a larger heated room on the right and a very small unheated service room on the left.
The exterior is two storeys high, displaying a regular two-window front with 20th-century one and two-light casements. A central 20th-century plank door provides access. Inside, the cottage has rough, insubstantial ceiling joists and an open fireplace, which has had a later lintel inserted below the original one, along with an oven on the left side. The feet of the roof trusses are not visible on the first floor.
