Description

No. 24 and 24A on High Street is a house and adjoining cottage that were likely originally one dwelling. It dates from the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and was probably extended in the 18th century. The building features rendered cob and rubble walls, with a gable-ended roof; the main part has thatch, while the right-hand end is lower and covered with asbestos slates. There is a brick stack at the right-hand end of the thatched section.

The layout suggests it was originally a two-room and through-passage plan, with the lower end to the right, which may have included an outbuilding or carriageway beyond. All first-floor windows are 19th-century leaded pane casements with pin hinges, featuring one, two, and three lights. The ground floor window on the left side (for No. 24A) is a 19th-century design with three fixed lights and has a 20th-century plank door to its left. This section is recessed from the main house, which has ground floor windows with fixed 19th-century lights of 12 and 20 panes. The central part of the building projects slightly, with its first floor overhanging on exposed joists. It features 19th-century double panelled doors at the center, above which is a Sun Insurance firemark.

Inside, there is an open fireplace with a rough wooden lintel in the right-hand room, and traces of a wooden spiral staircase at the rear. Although there is no access to the roof space, substantial straight principals with threaded purlins are visible on the first floor, indicating an early roof structure. The house maintains an unaltered traditional exterior.
