Description

Hatherleigh County Primary School is a school built in 1875, featuring sandstone rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof. The building has a rubble lateral stack on the side of the right-hand wing and an octagonal stone ashlar stack at the end of the belfry gable. The school consists of four main rooms, with one room at either end that projects slightly and two central rooms that may have originally been one. Attached to the right-hand end is the schoolmaster's house, connected by an entrance hall. There are 20th-century additions at the rear.

The exterior of the school is one storey and has a symmetrical front with projecting gables at either end and a central projecting gabled belfry. Each end gable features a 5-light mullion window, with the central three lights having arched heads, and small trefoils above. Inside each gable, there is a 2-light stone mullion window. On either side of the belfry, there are 2-light mullion windows with four-centred heads. The belfry itself has a gabled roof that overhangs the bell, adorned with a large quatrefoil panel below, and a stone inscribed "Board Schools 1875" underneath. The entrance, set back from the right-hand end, has wide 20th-century plank doors, with a 2-light mullion window to its left and a similar window above under a gable, which has a small gable to the right over a single light window. The two-storey schoolhouse features a canted 4-light bay window on the ground floor and a 2-light casement window above. The school retains an unaltered facade and is prominently situated at the entrance to the town.
