Description
The Cross Inn is a public house with origins dating back to the 17th century, located on Town Gate in Heptonstall. The building was refronted in the early 19th century and features large dressed stone and a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and an attic, facing the street.
The centrally placed doorway has monolithic jambs and a decorative cornice with consoles. Above the doorway is a signboard set in a recess, which likely covered what was originally a single window. To the left of the doorway is a canted bay window with three windows, each with a projecting sill on both floors. To the right is a semi-octagonal bay window, featuring a window with a projecting sill on each face.
The right-hand return wall is from the 17th century and includes some chamfered mullioned windows with two lights, although these are blocked. Attached to the north side is No. 1 Northgate, which provides additional accommodation for the inn. This section has a doorway with tie-stone jambs to the left of a window that has one narrow light and three wider lights. Above this is a nine-light flat-faced mullioned window. The main range has a gable stack, along with another stack at the junction with No. 48.
