Description

The Whitehall Archway is an archway located across a lane that leads to the rear of Whitehall Farmhouse in Heptonstall. It features a large monolithic lintel with the inscription "J B 1578" carved in relief. The archway is supported by roughly punch dressed square piers that date from the 18th or 19th century. It is believed that the lintel may have originally served as a cart entry for a barn and is possibly a reused element. Nearby, there is an 18th-century barn behind Whitehall Farmhouse, which has a similar monolithic lintel on its northern side, but lacks one on the southern side.
