Description

The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, built around 1764, was designed following recommendations by John Wesley, who laid the foundation stone. The chapel was extended in 1802 and features watershot masonry with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has an irregular octagonal shape, originally intended to be symmetrical. The building has a chamfered plinth, rusticated quoins, and a decorative band.

The central doorway, which is now partly blocked to create a window with stained glass, has tall monolithic jambs and a semi-circular arched head with a moulded impost and triple keystone. On either side of the entrance are tall doorways with monolithic jambs and square fanlights. The first floor contains windows with plain stone surrounds and projecting sills, featuring coloured glass margin panes. The longer sides of the chapel have two similar windows on each floor. The tripartite hipped roof is believed to have been constructed by the same carpenter who built the Rotherham Octagon in 1761.

Inside, the chapel has a gallery with canted ends supported by stone Tuscan columns, and the entablature features a plaster cast of laurel leaves. Some box pews are present in the main body, along with raked seating in the gallery. The minister's tall pulpit, along with en-suite altar rails and a small organ behind, dates from early 19th-century alterations. The ceiling features an octagonal plaster boss, and there are several stained glass windows.

A copper plaque on the outside reads: "HEPTONSTALL METHODIST CHAPEL THE OLDEST METHODIST CHAPEL IN THE WORLD IN CONTINUOUS USE. THE SOCIETY WAS FOUNDED BY WILLIAM DARNEY ABOUT 1742 THE REV. JOHN WESLEY PREACHED AT HEPTONSTALL FOR THE LAST TIME IN 1786."
