Description

The George Oates Greenwood Mausoleum, dated 1845, is constructed from ashlar and features surrounding stone piers with wooden fencing. The mausoleum has a square plan with a batter and includes a plinth, banded rustication, a modillioned cornice, and a triangular pediment. The tympanum is decorated with a wreath and ribbons. There are doorways with eared architraves on the east and west faces, featuring 2-panelled oak doors with a cast-iron grille and a rectangular fanlight. Atop the structure is a large urn, with corner blocks adorned with wreaths on their cardinal faces. An engraved tablet on the north face is flanked by inverted torches and bears the inscription: "ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGE OATES GREENWOOD OF NETHERWOOD HOUSE, WHO DIED APRIL XXVI;MDCCCXLV, AGED XLVII YEARS." Additional memorials to William Greenwood and his wife Ann are located on the south face. The surrounding fencing consists of wooden uprights and crossmembers with St. Andrew's Crosses set between, linked to dressed monoliths that are square on plan, featuring arched heads and circles in relief on the cardinal faces. Access is provided by a gate to the east.
