Description
The Orton Mausoleum, designed by architect Thomas Mackenzie from Elgin in 1844, is a Gothic-style rectangular gabled structure located within a burial ground. It features a southwest entrance front made of tooled ashlar with harled flanks and polished ashlar dressings. Access is provided by a shallow flight of steps leading to paired pointed-headed entrances set within a recessed pointed-headed arch. The design includes flanking nook-shafts, a central trumeau, an inscribed quatrefoil spandrel, and angle buttresses topped with simple pinnacles, along with a cross at the apex.
The mausoleum has three long elevations, with a centrally projecting gabled bay at the northeast. The long elevations are lit by hoodmoulded pointed-headed windows, with similar windows at the northeast gable featuring paired lights. The glazing consists of lattice panes, and the steeply pitched roof is covered with local slate, featuring saw-tooth skews and apex finials.
Surrounding the mausoleum and burial ground is a coped rubble wall, which includes a pair of square tooled ashlar gate piers at the southwest, adorned with gablet finials, and a pair of cast-iron gates. Additionally, St Mary's Well is located at the center of the northeast wall; it is a small drinking well of earlier origin, set within a Gothic pedestal inscribed with "St Mary's Well." Although remnants of a chain remain, no drinking cup is present.
