Description

A former Piece-Hall, now a shop, flat, and house, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. The front is built of ashlar stone, with watershot masonry to the sides, and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and exhibits a symmetrical three-bay facade, topped with a pedimented gable. Raised quoins are visible, and giant pilasters support a moulded pediment. The entablature and frieze are decorated with alternating urns and quatrefoils. The tympanum features a rectangular panel containing an oval with a low-relief urn. The doorway has monolithic jambs and a cornice. Above the doorway is a 16-pane sash window with architrave and cornice. Large four-pane sash shop windows flank the doorway retaining the heads of former bows. Sash windows are also present on the first floor. The right-hand return wall has six bays, featuring two doorways with semicircular arched heads, impost blocks, and keystones. Sash windows with raised surrounds are positioned on either side of the doorways. Moulded gutter brackets are also present. Two well-dressed stacks rise from the ridge. The building is prominently situated in the centre of town and possesses group value owing to its contribution to the streetscape.
