Description
4 Barker Hades Road is a cottage that has been converted into a single dwelling. It has a core dating from the 16th or 17th century, which is encased in 18th-century work, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior features some internal timber framing, coursed rubble limestone, and a pantile roof. The building has an L-shaped core with later extensions.
The front facing the road is two storeys high and has three windows on the first floor, with a projecting wing on the left. The main entrance features a part-glazed door with a pantile canopy, accompanied by a three-light casement window with horizontal glazing bars on the right and a one-light casement beyond. The first floor has casement windows of one, two, and three lights, all with horizontal glazing bars. The gabled wing on the left includes a 20th-century casement window to the left of an added external stack and a casement window on each floor of the right return. The roof is hipped on the right side, and there is a T-sectioned brick stack on the main ridge to the left.
Inside, the central ground-floor room has a transverse beam and stop-chamfered joists, along with a bressumer beam featuring a heck post and a recess where a fire window once was, as well as a plain ashlar fireplace. On the first floor, there are wall posts and a tie beam above the bressumer, and another wall post may indicate the location of a former framed cross-wing. The rear wing displays an exposed principal-rafter truss with soffit mortices on the cambered tie beam.
