Description

Oak Tree Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th century to the left and centre, built around a possible earlier core. A 17th-century wing was added to the right, with alterations occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries. The construction is timber-framed, with exposed timber on the left return front and brick infill. The ground floor on the left features iron and puddingstone blocks with brick dressings, set on a rendered plinth, while the first floor is tile-hung. To the centre, the walls are brown brick clad, and the wing on the right is tile-hung. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The building follows a half-H shape plan with projecting cross wings. A large stack is located to the left of the centre on the rear roof pitch, featuring a corbelled top, and a smaller stack is on the right-hand return front. The cottage has two storeys with a plat band above the ground floor. Diagonal brick dentils are present on the eaves, and the tile hanging sweeps out over the ground floor. There is a three-light casement window to the left of the centre on the rear range, and one window on each floor to the front, with the lower one under a segmental head. The left-hand gable end has one three-light window on each floor. The right-hand wing has a three-light window on each floor, with a four-light window on the ground floor. A 20th-century panelled door is on the rear range to the right of the centre. A stable-style door is located on the left-hand return wall of the right-hand wing, sheltered by a pentice hood.
