Description
The Dunsfold War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1934. It is made of stone and features bronze plaques. The memorial consists of a cross on a tapering shaft, which is mounted on a square plinth with a three-stepped octagonal base.
The plinth has an inscription that reads: IN MEMORIAM/ 1914-1919/ 1939-1945. On each side of the plinth, there are bronze plaques. The first plaque commemorates the men of the village who died in the Great War 1914-1918, stating: TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO DIED IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE, followed by the names of seventeen men.
The second plaque honors the men of the village who died in World War II 1939-1945, reading: TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO DIED IN/ THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945, followed by the names of eleven men and concluding with AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
The memorial is enclosed by an octagonal arrangement of thirteen bollards, which are connected by a spiked chain.
