Description
The Earls Barton War Memorial is a First World War memorial, built around 1920, with later additions. It features an elaborate stone cross with a foliate head that has an inverted bronze sword, set atop an octagonal shaft adorned with four bronze shields at its base. The shaft rises from an octagonal, multi-faceted plinth, which stands on an octagonal base. Surrounding the plinth are bronze tablets, one of which bears the inscription: "THIS MEMORIAL HAS BEEN RAISED/ BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE/ MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO/ FOUGHT AND FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR FOR FREEDOM/ AND RIGHT 1914 – 1918/ + ‘THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE/ AND THESE STONES SHALL BE/ FOR A MEMORIAL FOR EVER’." Other tablets list the names of the fallen, including a separate tablet for those who fell in 1939-45. The memorial is enclosed by an original expansive, angled, railed enclosure. However, the modern brick paving within and the asphalt surrounding the memorial are not of special interest and are excluded from the listing.
