Description

Dilton Marsh War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated at the roadside near the junction of High Street and The Hollow, directly across from the Church of Holy Trinity, which is a Grade II*-listed building.

The memorial features a wheel-head cross pattée with a tapering rectangular shaft that ends in a two-stepped moulded foot. The front face of the shaft displays an inverted Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief. This shaft rises from a four-sided plinth, which is placed on a rectangular stone base.

The main inscription, in incised lettering painted black, is located on the north-west face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN/ WAR/ 1914 - 1919/ (41 NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." On the south-west face of the plinth, there is a bronze plaque with cast raised lettering that states: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF DILTON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WAR 1939 - 1945/ (13 NAMES)." Additionally, there is a dedication in incised lettering, painted black, for a single casualty from a later conflict in 1976.

The memorial is set within an area of hardstanding and is surrounded on three sides—north-east, south-east, and south-west—by a low, regular-coursed stone wall with flat stone copings. The north-west side is open, marked by a chain supported by two posts.
