Description

The Nunthorpe War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921. It is made of buff Dunhouse stone and features a bronze plaque. The memorial is surrounded by stone paving and takes the form of a Celtic cross, which has carved knot-work decoration on the front face. The cross rises from a tall lozenge-shaped plinth that carries an embossed bronze plaque. The plaque bears the inscription: "ERECTED TO THE HONOURED MEMORY/OF THE FOLLOWING LOCAL MEN WHO/FOUGHT AND FELL IN DEFENCE OF/KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918, AND ALSO AS A TOKEN OF/ GRATITUDE TO ALL WHO SERVED IN/THE SAME JUST CAUSE."
