Description

The Chapel of St. Mary, located in the grounds of Nunthorpe Hall, is a chapel-of-ease built in 1824, as noted in the east window. It may be on the site of a 14th-century chapel. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone and features a Lakeland slate roof with stone gable copings. It is designed in the Gothic revival style and consists of a single cell. The chapel has a chamfered plinth and a boarded west door with studs, set in a Tudor-arched, double-chamfered surround, which is adorned with cusped spandrels and a hoodmould. Above the door is a similar window with three trefoil-headed lights. The gable features a cross-arrow loop with deep moulded coping, a partly-renewed gabled bellcote topped with a cross finial, and a bell in a pointed opening. Diagonal buttresses support the structure, and there are square-headed windows on the north, south, and east sides, with a blocked square window in the east gable.

Inside, the chapel is plastered and ceiled, showcasing moulded exposed joists and beams on corbels, along with a narrow cornice. The interior also includes painted pointed-arcaded panelled stalls with fleur-de-lys finials at the ends and patterned encaustic-tiled floors. Stained glass in the west window dates to 1869, while the east window, dated 1863, depicts St. Peter and St. Paul. The chapel is included for its group value.
