Garden Terrace Wall, Stairs And Steps, In Grounds Of Nunthorpe Hall

The garden terrace wall, stairs, and steps in the grounds of Nunthorpe Hall date from the mid to late 17th century, with the south steps being renewed around 1900. Constructed from dressed sandstone, the structure forms an L-shape on the south and east sides of Nunthorpe Hall. The south wall consists of 20 bays and the east wall has 21 bays, with the bays defined by pilaster strips and topped with moulded copings.

On the south wall, the 3rd and 9th bays feature three projecting steps, each flanked by original panelled and corniced pedestals that lack plinths. The east wall's 2nd bay includes paired niches with shell heads and plain surrounds. The 7th and 9th bays display worn grotesques with floating cornices above and below. A staircase is located in the 20th bay, accompanied by similar niches in the adjacent bays, with the right niche having a plain head.
