Description
The garden terraces and steps located to the southeast of Haddon Hall date from the mid 16th century and early 17th century. They are constructed from rubble limestone and ashlar gritstone. The design features a series of four garden terraces that descend to river level, with high dry stone limestone rubble retaining walls and flights of steps connecting the different levels.
The top terrace, which dates to the early 17th century, includes a balustrade with central steps leading to the lower terrace on its southern side. This balustrade consists of five bay arcades made of square rusticated balusters, with semi-circular headed arches in between, featuring projecting keystones. It is topped by a wide handrail and supported by large rusticated piers that are adorned with large ball finials.
The lower terrace is supported by high walls to the southeast and southwest, each featuring a series of massive dry stone walls with battered buttresses. There is a similar wall with buttresses to the southwest that supports the path near the Chapel, which includes a long flight of steps leading down to river level at the southern end. The two lower terraces are partly paved, with steps between them at the eastern corner. These lower terraces may date back to the mid 16th century, coinciding with the reconstruction of the southeast range of the west courtyard.
