Description
The entrance gatehouse to Haddon Hall, now partly a shop, dates from the early 20th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone and gritstone rubble with gritstone dressings and quoins. The stone slate roof features stone stacks positioned midway down the southern pitch. The gatehouse is two storeys high and consists of five bays.
At the center, there is a moulded, shallow segmental-headed archway with massive studded wooden doors, which includes a small door incorporated into the eastern door. Flanking the archway are stepped ashlar buttresses that rise to the first floor, each supporting a 3-light chamfered mullion window and a single light chamfered window beyond. Similar buttresses are located at the extreme east and west corners of the building. Above the archway, there is a central 3-light chamfered mullion window, with pairs of similar 2-light windows on either side. All the windows feature diamond leaded lights.
The north facade mirrors the style of the south facade but has a different window arrangement, with central moulded, ogee-headed doorcases on either side of the archway. This gatehouse is included for its group value.
