Description

The stableblock, now serving as a tea room and toilets, dates back to the 14th century and was altered in the 17th century, with restoration occurring in 1912. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone blocks at the base, which rise to random limestone and gritstone rubble, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins. The roof is made of 20th-century stone slate. The building has two storeys and three bays.

The central feature is a moulded, semi-circular headed arch with moulded capitals and jambs that are carved into the quoins. Above this arch, there is carved stone decoration depicting heads and animals. On either side of the arch are square breathers, with stepped ashlar buttresses extending beyond them. Similar buttresses are located near the quoins at both ends of the building.

Between the western buttresses, there are two 17th-century 2-light chamfered mullion windows with iron grids holding diamond leaded lights. Slightly above these is a small 2-light timber window with diamond set timber bars also holding diamond leaded lights. Between the eastern buttresses, there is an inserted window to the west and a 17th-century 3-light recessed and chamfered window to the east. Above these, there are three 2-light chamfered mullion windows.

Access to the first floor is via a flight of steps leading up to a quoined doorcase on the east gable wall. Inside, the central bay features stone flags and a hay byre at the end. To the west, there is a chamfered, four-centred arched doorcase with an oak plank door, which may be original. To the east, there is a similar oak door set in a wooden doorframe.
