Description
This is a section of a roadside wall with steps located immediately in front of Ouslethwaite Hall. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and serves as a garden retaining wall with steps leading to a central gateway. The wall is constructed from coursed, dressed sandstone and features ashlar pillars. The central gate piers are accessed by steps on either side of a stone platform. The retaining walls consist of convex panels of stonework, with three panels on the left and five on the right, separated by ashlar pillars. The gate piers have roll-moulded edges and a square section that tapers at the top. The dividing pillars extend above the wall copings and have ogee-profile tops, which originally included sockets for a cresting balustrade that has since been removed. This structure is included for its group value.
