Description
Ouslethwaite Hall is a large house that has been converted into 11 flats. It dates from the late 18th century, with early 19th-century additions, and was built for the Elmhirst estate. The building features deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone and has a 20th-century cement-tile roof. It is a double-depth structure with three storeys and five bays, plus a two-storey single-bay wing set back on the right, which extends as a rear wing.
The main facade includes raised ashlar quoins and a three-step stylobate leading to a Doric porch with a full entablature. This porch encloses a panelled door with decorative radial glazing bars in the overlight. The other bays on each floor have 4-pane sash windows with projecting sills and raised surrounds. The central windows are set in an ashlar panel and feature moulded sills, while the second-floor openings are shorter. The roof is hipped, with corniced ashlar end stacks.
On the right wing, there is a blocked doorway on the left with a slightly pulvinated frieze and cornice, and a sashed Venetian window on the right beneath a tripartite sash. A tall ashlar stack with a cornice is also present. At the rear, there is a tall round-headed stair window with external steps leading to a door on the half-landing. The right return has scattered fenestration of sashes and casements, including one window with 30 panes and another with 24 panes, along with various corniced stacks.
Inside, there is a contemporary staircase featuring a fielded-panel dado and simple turned balustrade, along with some contemporary doors and fireplaces.
