Description
The terrace walls, balustrades, and steps located to the north of Unthank Hall are likely from the mid-19th century but were brought to the site around 1900. They are constructed from rock-faced masonry with ashlar dressings. The terrace retaining wall features rounded projections at the east end, in the center, and at the north-west corner, where it returns south for a short distance. The balustrade includes urn balusters and a flat moulded coping, positioned between tooled ashlar piers topped with urn finials; some of these finials have been replaced with carvings of birds and animals. There are flights of steps located in the center and at each end of the wall, with additional flights leading from the drive down onto the terrace, positioned in the center and near the west end. Each flight of steps is flanked at both the top and bottom by low piers that also feature urn finials.
