Description

The terrace wall and steps at the south front of Highnam Court were built in 1843 for T. Gambier-Parry, likely designed by L. Vulliamy. The structure features Flemish-bond brickwork and ashlar stone, along with terracotta urns. The wall encloses a rectangular terrace that is about 9 meters deep in front of the house. In the center of the longer side, there are six stone steps with projecting nosing, and the bottom step is scrolled at the ends. Approximately 6 meters in front of the wall, there is an urn on each side, both decorated with leaf motifs on the bowl and resting on square bases.

On either side of the steps, the terrace wall has a moulded stone cap, with a balustrade in three sections flanking a central opening. The balusters extend over the ends, and there is a brick wall in the center topped with a wide stone cap that has a moulded edge. Square plain piers are positioned on each side of the center, while larger square piers rise above the balustrade at the corners, featuring recessed joints and wide urns with handles on top.

The right return has six stone steps leading down at the front, flanked by plain ashlar walls to the terrace level on each side. The steps are framed by short ashlar spurs, and the balustrade mirrors that of the front terrace wall, with an additional large pier and wide urn at the rear. Between the last pier and the corner of the house, there are six stone steps leading down to the rear. The left return mirrors the right but has smaller urns on each side of the front steps, with a large urn at the rear missing.
