Description
The bridge and dam over the lake near Chepstow Lodge at Highnam Court were built in the mid-19th century for T. Gambier-Parry. The structure features English bond brickwork and an ashlar balustrade, with a squared stone section below the arch. It has a wide central section flanked by narrower sides. On the downstream side, there are two piers on each side of the central opening, which is topped by a segmental blue brick arch. There is also a smaller rectangular opening near the top of the arch, which is infilled with stone to create the dam and cascade. Above the moulded stone base, the balustrade is divided into three lengths with plain piers and a moulded stone cap. This bridge was part of the garden work surrounding the house and carries the drive from Chepstow Lodge over the foot of the lake. It forms a group with Highnam Court and its terraces.
