Description
Spring Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with an extension added in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble, with the front and rear brought to course and dressed quoins. The roof is thatched with gabled ends, and there is an integral stack at the east end featuring a rebuilt brick shaft. The cottage has a small one-cell plan with the integral stack on the right-hand (east) end. The axial division, which includes a service room at the back, was likely a later alteration, as was the extension on the east end.
The exterior consists of one storey and an attic. On the left side, there is a 20th-century panelled and glazed door with a timber lintel. To the right of the centre, there is a late 19th-century three-light bay window with glazing bars, and a small single-light window to the right. Above the ground floor bay window, there is an eaves thatch eyebrow over a late 19th-century four-pane sash window. The rear (north) features 18th-century one, two, and three-light casements with glazing bars and timber lintels, along with a two-light casement in the west gable end.
Inside, the cottage has exposed joists and an unchamfered axial beam over the partition between the front and back rooms. The front room includes a large stone fireplace with a cranked chamfered timber lintel that has stops and ovens. There are plank doors and a Victorian chimneypiece in the chamber. The purlins and principal rafters are exposed in the chambers, with the principals crossed at the apex along with an intact ridgepiece, common rafters, and battens.
