Description

Corbett Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, which has been significantly restored in the 20th century and features a 20th-century extension at the east end. The building is constructed of stone rubble and partly cob, topped with a thatched roof that has gabled ends and two eyebrow features at the eaves. The roof at the east end is at a higher level, suggesting that the eaves may have been raised. There is a stone rubble lateral stack at the rear. The plan has been altered, but it likely originally had a two-room layout with a central passage that now contains stairs; the original doorway may have been to the right of the current entrance. The cottage has a lateral stack at the rear of the hall, which is located at the east end, and a 20th-century lean-to at the east end. The building is one storey with an attic and has two storeys at the right side. It features a three-window range with 20th-century casements that have leaded panes. To the left of the centre is a 20th-century plank door with a thatched porch. Inside, the right-hand room has a hall fireplace in the lateral rear stack, which features an unusual shouldered timber lintel with a scroll-stopped chamfer; the shoulders have thin chamfers and notched soffits. There is also a chamfered ceiling beam in the hall with scroll stops, and the clean roof trusses have morticed apices and side-pegged lapped collars.
