Description

A house, likely dating to the early 16th century, was reduced in size to form a cottage. The building is constructed of roughcast stone rubble with a thatched roof, featuring a half-hipped end facing the road and a gabled end with two eyebrow dormers to the front. The original plan may have been a three-room layout with a through passage, or an open hall with low screen partitions. Originally, the house extended to the east, and that section was replaced by a barn that was demolished in 1985. A large lateral stack projects from the rear wall. The cottage has one storey and an attic, with a three-window front. It has 20th-century casement windows and a 20th-century door positioned to the left of centre, with a 20th-century wooden porch. Inside, a room at the west end features chamfered ceiling beams with straight-cut stops. Four smoke-blackened roof trusses are present, with morticed apices and morticed collars, and two tiers of threaded purlins. The diagonal ridge piece, most of the rafters, and bottoms all survive; these are smoke-blackened, though the thatch itself appears new.
