Description
St Mary's Lodge is a house that consists of two parts built in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from regularly coursed ironstone rubble and has Welsh slate roofs, with stone stacks at both ends and along the ridge. The left section features a two-unit plan with two storeys plus an attic and has a two-window range. The right section also has a two-unit plan but is two storeys high with a three-window range. The entrance to the right part includes a six-panelled door with an overlight and a Tuscan porch. There are two sash windows on the right side with keystoned surrounds, and three similar windows on the first floor. Both sections have 20th-century roof dormers. The left part has two sash windows with keystoned surrounds on both the ground and first floors. Inside, there is a wreathed handrail on the main staircase. St Mary's Lodge was previously used as a girl's boarding school, and remnants such as cloakroom pegs and a washroom can still be seen in the room to the left. A re-set datestone from 1754 in an old stable block may indicate the date of the earliest part of the house.
