Description
This building is a barn located to the south of Alderman's Head Cote Farmhouse, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It features a cruck frame that is clad in coursed, squared stone and has a stone slate roof. The barn consists of three and a half internal bays, with an outshut on the front left and another on the rear left. There is a central square-headed cart entry, along with altered and blocked openings to the right. The left outshut has small ventilation holes. At the rear, there is an opposed cart entry in a later outshut, and ventilation slits in the original outshut to the right. The left side of the barn has two doorways with quoined surrounds; the left doorway features an early door with a pegged oak surround. The interior includes three cruck trusses with collars and extended tie-beams. Re-used cruck blades have been added between the first and second crucks to support the purlins. The third cruck is missing and has been replaced by a 19th-century queen-post truss, while the fourth cruck is built into the gable wall of the later house that adjoins to the right. The wall plate is intact, and a diagonally-set ridge piece survives in two bays.
