Description
The barn at Langsett House, dated 1621, is constructed from coursed squared rubble and features a stone slate roof. It has five internal bays and is aisled at the front, with quoins visible on the corners. The main entrance is a central recessed, square-headed cart-entry, with later side entrances into the aisles, one of which is blocked. The rear of the barn has a chamfered plinth and a central, smaller cart-entry that is also square-headed, featuring a quoined surround and a deep lintel. There are eight regularly-placed ventilation slits, with those at the upper level having triangular heads set in deep square lintels, although the jambs of three are missing. The right return of the barn includes a lean-to addition that is not of special interest. In the gable apex, there is a ventilation hole with a very deep lintel inscribed "GW 1621".
Inside, the barn contains four open trusses, with struts present on only one truss, supported by four jowelled arcade posts. The trusses are lapped at the apex and feature a diagonally-set ridge-piece, along with two sets of purlins and later square-cut rafters. Most of the wall plates are missing, and only one aisle tie remains.
