Description
Town Head Cottages is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed of deeply coursed, squared gritstone with stone slate roofs and has an L-shaped plan with two storeys and irregular window arrangements.
The roadside elevation features large quoins and a central doorway with a chamfered quoined surround and a shaped lintel topped with a hoodmould. There are 20th-century casement windows on either side of the door and to the first floor on the left. A double-chamfered window on the first floor right has been fitted with a 20th-century casement. The crosswing to the right has a 20th-century part-glazed door in a chamfered surround. The building has ashlar ridge and end stacks.
At the rear, most of the windows are from the 19th century, but there is a remnant of a double-chamfered window with a hoodmould to the left of the door. Above this is a three-light square-faced mullion window. The crosswing has a half-hipped roof. On the right return, there is a three-light double-chamfered mullion window under a truncated hoodmould to the right, with an altered opening to the left. Two two-light double-chamfered mullion windows on the first floor have been replaced with 20th-century casements. The cottages are included in the listing mainly for their group value.
