Description

A barn, dating from the late 17th century, is located on the south side of Lower Maythorn Lane, near Hepworth. The barn is constructed from coursed, squared rubble with a stone slate roof. It has five internal bays, with a wider aisle along the front and a smaller aisle to the rear. The corners are emphasised by quoins. A full-height, square-headed cart entrance with a chamfered surround is centrally placed; to either side of this are two Tudor-arched entrances, and small, chamfered vents. The right gable has a shaped coping. Moulded kneelers are present. A central cart entry is also located at the rear. The left gable is built into a bank and incorporates a high-level, chamfered doorway. Internally, the barn features four king-post trusses, braced to the ridge, with arcade posts resting on padstones, braced to tie-beams, and containing lifting holes. Aisle-ties are present only on the front aisle. The purlins, rafters, and battens are all intact. An ornamental tablet, likely reset—possibly from the nearby farmhouse—is within the main doorway and reads "RM 1691".
