Description
Lower Maythorn Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The building features deeply-coursed, dressed stone in its early part, while the rest is made of squared, coursed rubble. It has a stone slate roof and an L-shaped plan, standing two storeys tall.
To the right, there is a gabled, projecting, single-bay wing from the 17th century, which originally had a 4-light double-chamfered window on each floor, although it has been altered to a 2-light window. Each window has a hood-mould with square decorative stops, and there is a small single-light window with a hood-mould in the gable apex. The gable features moulded copings on moulded kneelers and an ornamental finial at the apex.
On the left side of the projecting bay, there is a 2-light double-chamfered window on each floor. The rest of the front displays 19th and 20th-century features that are of no special interest, except for the remains of a possible former doorway and first-floor hood-mould stops at the right end. The right wing has an ashlar stack with a moulded cornice and cap. The rear elevation includes four early 19th-century single-light windows on each floor, and the right return has two small double-chamfered openings, one of which has a hood-mould. The interior has not been inspected.
