Description

Rookeries is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from slobbered rubble brought to course, with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The building has a three-cell plan and a rear cross wing, with its gable end facing the street.

The entrance front is two storeys high and consists of four bays. The second bay features a projecting gabled entrance porch with a chamfered surround, a basket-arched lintel, and a four-panel door. Above the porch, there is a single chamfered light in the gable. The first bay has a ground floor three-light double chamfered mullioned window with a hoodmould, and a two-light double chamfered mullioned window on the upper floor. The third and fourth bays contain two four-light double chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on the ground floor, and three and two-light double chamfered mullioned windows on the upper floor. Many of the windows were heightened in the late 19th century and now feature casements and some mullions from around 1980. The eaves are supported by modillions.

There is a right-of-centre ridge stack and a right-hand gable end stack. At the rear, the projecting gabled cross wing has a late 17th-century ground floor three-light double chamfered mullioned window, which includes a right-hand mullion from around 1980. Inside, the central room features a massive inglenook fireplace with a chamfered surround, stops at the base, and a segmental arch made of four voussoirs.
