Description
This milestone, likely dating from the mid-18th century, is set into a wall opposite the junction to Paw Hill Farm on Hartcliffe Road. It is a monolithic stone with a round head, featuring an inscription on the front face that displays the Roman numerals "XVI", indicating that Rotherham is 16 miles away. There is also a later benchmark located below the inscription. Hartcliffe Road was established as a turnpike road in 1741, suggesting that the milestone was likely erected around that time. The stone is situated along an old salt route from Cheshire.
